PTFE Tape Inspection
Verification of PTFE Tape Application
NOTICE: It is important to inspect applied PTFE tape prior to installation to promote a leak-tight connection and reduce the potential for system damage.
Properly applied PTFE tape will:
- not overhang the first thread. Tape should never extend beyond or overhang the first thread as tape could shred and get into the system.
- have a consistent number of wraps with no gaps, folds, or creases in the tape.
- cover threads equal to the width of the tape used. 1/4 in. width tape is used for 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 in. end connections. 1/2 in. width tape is used for 1/2 and 3/4 in. end connections.
- have no slices or gouges in the tape.
- be free from dirt and debris.
- have an even amount of space between the face of the connection and the edge of the tape closest to it. The edge should intersect the thread immediately behind the scratch mark.
